Learning from every birth, supporting every midwife.

Safer Births is a research and development collaboration to increase newborn and maternal survival.

Newborns in Tanzania

Globally 10-15% of all newborns need help to breathe.

Each year an estimated 10 million babies require assistance to initiate breathing. Birth asphyxia is the leading cause of newborn death. 99% of these deaths occur in low or middle-income countries. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

That’s why we put together a global team of experts, from researchers, product developers to doctors and midwives in the field to improve healthcare systems to help prevent newborn and maternal morbidity and mortality.

Every baby should survive. Every mother should survive.

Every life is important.

Monica Tippe, Head of Labor ward at Haydom Hospital

Since 2012, Haydom Lutheran Hospital, Stavanger University Hospital, and Laerdal Global Health have been collaborating on research and developing solutions to save perinatal lives. The collaboration resulted in innovative solutions and increased knowledge that has influenced a culture of continuous improvement. Most importantly, it was shown that by using these tools in a systematic way, midwives were able to save more lives every year.
